CHICAGO - (UPI)- The National Safety Council (NSC) warned Wednesday that traffic deaths threaten to soar to 450 over the four-day Fourth of July holiday. An additional 20,000 persons could sustain disabling injuries over the 102-hour holiday period beginning Friday evening, June 30, and running through midnight, July 4, the council estimated. This year's estimate tops the death toll of 426 over the last four-day Fourth of July holiday in 1957 but falls below the 15-year-high of 491 deaths in 1950 for a comparable July Fourth holiday. NSC executive vice president George C. Stewart said nearly all the nation's 74 million cars would be on the road over the holiday period, traveling a total of 10 billion miles. The resulting traffic death toll could be 25 percent higher than over a comparable non-holiday period, Stewart said.
