Cast About for a Successor to Judge Waterman.
Des Moines. June 18 - There is some doubt as to what Governor Cummins will do with reference to filling the vacancy on the supreme bench caused by the resignation of Judge Waterman. He is giving the matter consideration as to whether he will appoint a man or will wait for the convention to make a nomination. Several names are up in connection with the vacancy. Charles A. Bishop of Des Moines, who was an admittedly winning candidate last year, but withdrew in deference to the candidacy of Cummins for Governor, James C. Davis of Keokuk, Leggett of Fairfield, Sloan of Keosauqua, Judge H. M. Towner of Corning, who also was nominated at Cedar Rapids last year and a number of others, including Judge T. M. Fee of Centerville, are mentioned. The first, sixth, seventh, eighth, tenth and fifth districts are now represented in the supreme court and it is assumed that if the governor appoints he will go to one of these districts for the man.
