NEW-YORK RACES

We extract the following humorous article from the New-York National Advocate:-

Clear the Course!! Our Races next week, will make more noise than New-Market or Epsom, and Eclipse excites more interest than the famous filly Moses, belonging to our friend the Duke of York. Strangers are pouring in from all quarters. We have white hats and sallow faces from the south; rosy cheeks and cunning phizzes from the east; Johnny raws from the north; and a few of the knowing ones from the west; current and uncurrent money quite plenty; race course crowded each day; twenty horses training and every effort made to beat Eclipse.

It is impossible to say how the thing will go. The southerners are full of money and ready to bet any sum against Eclipse; the north is ready to poney up any thing in behalf of their favorite sorrel. Much speculation and jockeying on the tapis. Our Wall-street Brokers won't touch the stock. Harry Sprightful has a cool $500 on Eclipse; ditto Bobby Careless; ditto Jack Humdrum; Tom Tick $2000; do. Baron Nabem: do. the Honorable Jack Shuffle : $1,500 Captain Snacks; $1,500 Billy Wagtail, together with a thousand minor bets of hats, coats, boots, et cetera. These offers have been promptly backed by the knowing ones of the Pedee, Santee, the Waccamaw, and the Roanoke, who are all on the ground with their little negurs, and appear to be up to a thing or two.

In the mean time nothing is heard but the races. Frank Sportive has a new Barouche, Tommy Smashem a new Gig and tandem--lots of crop tail ponies are ready, and we are threatened with six entire new carriages, brass furniture, yellow pannels, new liveries, spanking greys, lace veils, full purses, silk parasols, Leghorn flats,--'that's your sort,' as Goldfinch says. All is bustle and preparation.--"Will you dine with me Monday, Bob?" "What me? ho, O dear, O Lord, ho, ha, I'am engaged three days, dine on the race course, ho! ho! ha! ha!" "Pray ma'am, shall we make up our little pic nic to Orange springs on Monday or Tuesday?" "Dear me, you forget sir--we go to the races"-"O beg pardon." "Carman, fetch me a load of nut wood, on Tuesday."--"Can't sir"-must have it now. "I'am going to go to the races on Tuesday. Long Island against sweet potatoes forever." "Hear you sweepy, my chimblies wants sweeping, come Tuesday" "Can't Massa, I go to de races--we all valk dere, got six shilling to bet on 'Clipse,--noting from the slave ho ding state beat us liberty and equality boys."

In the meantime all is active preparation on that famous course. Booths erecting, flags flying, pigs roasting, fidlers tuning, and all dust and confusion.

N. B. Six Pick Pockets were yesterday lodged in Bridewell, being on their way to the race course, to train in their vocation.
