LONDON, May 31.

It is said that when the Abbe de Salmen, the Portuguese Minister at Paris, went to demand the necessary Passports for his Return home, some of the French Noblemen in the French Ministry, among whom was the Duke de Choiseul, behaved with great Coolness to him, and told him it was the worst Thing his Master, the King of Portugal, had ever done in his Life, to refuse to join in the Treaty between Spain and France, as by that Means he exposed his Country to the Horrors of War and Blood Shed, which he could blame no body for but himself, and which would probably end in his being driven a Fugitive from his Throne and Dominions. To this terrible Denunciation, the Abbe very calmly replied, that they should rely for Protection on the Justice of their Cause, and that he did not doubt but that the King his Master, with the Assistance of the All-wise Disposer of Things, and his faithful Allies, would be able to maintain the Safety and Dignity of his Kingdom, without being compell'd to act so greatly against his own Honor and Conscience.

Event Details

Abbe de Salmen, Portuguese Minister at Paris, demanded passports for return home. French noblemen in the ministry, including Duke de Choiseul, treated him coolly and warned that Portugal's refusal to join the Spain-France treaty exposed it to war horrors, self-blameable, likely ending in the king's flight from throne. Abbe replied calmly, relying on justice, divine assistance, and allies to maintain kingdom's safety and dignity without violating honor and conscience.
