What is this article about?
At a recent session of the Paris Academy of Sciences, M. de la Place proposed four scientific questions for rigorous investigation: intensity of terrestrial magnetism, proportion of atmospheric gases, sea-level atmospheric pressure, and heat of the Earth at various depths. A commission including Laplace, Poisson, Gay-Lussac, and Arago was appointed to conduct experiments.

M. de la Place, in one of the last
sittings of the Academy of Sciences
at Paris, proposed the following four
questions for examination and decision,
by a commission of that philo-
sophical body:—1st. The actual in-
ensity of the terrestrial magnetism.
2d. The exact proportion of the
two gases which constitute our at-
mosphere:—3d. The exact pres-
sure of the atmosphere at the sur-
face of the sea:—4th. The heat of
the terrestrial globe at different
depths, following latitudes and other
appreciable differences. This ingen-
ious academician allowed, that two
or more of these points had been al-
ready examined by the greatest phi-
losophers, and had been considered
as sufficiently settled for most prac-
tical purposes; but he thought that
results sufficiently accurate to be ap-
pealed to by posterity ought to be es-
tablished after a still more rigorous
inquiry. Unless a more decided and
more generally admitted statement
of facts involved in these questions
could be made, future ages would
want the means of ascertaining or
measuring the changes which may
take place on the surface of our
globe. A commission was accord-
ingly appointed to make experiments
to ascertain the above points, and
M. de la Place, Poisson, Guy-Lussac,
and Arago, were nominated
members.

M. de la Place proposed four questions for examination by the Academy of Sciences: 1st, the actual intensity of terrestrial magnetism; 2d, the exact proportion of the two gases constituting the atmosphere; 3d, the exact pressure of the atmosphere at sea surface; 4th, the heat of the terrestrial globe at different depths by latitudes and other differences. He noted prior examinations but advocated for more rigorous inquiry for posterity. A commission including M. de la Place, Poisson, Guy-Lussac, and Arago was nominated.
