SENATE.—WASHINGTON, June 26.
A bill was reported from the Committee on the District of Columbia for the establishment of a Reform School for boys in the District. A bill was also introduced to establish the Metropolitan Club of the District of Columbia, which was referred to the Committee on the District. A bill was passed authorizing the construction of a bridge across the Cuyahoga River, at Cleveland, Ohio. The House bill to amend the organic act of Washington Territory was taken up and passed. The Senate then took up the bill to amend the act establishing the Freedmen's Bureau. An amendment was agreed to providing that the lands held by negroes in South Carolina and Georgia, under General Sherman's order, shall be given up on the 1st of next January, and the freedmen shall be allowed to purchase lands acquired by the Government from tax sales. The bill was then passed. The Senate afterwards went into executive session, and, at its close, adjourned.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.—A letter from the Postmaster-General in relation to certain abuses in the use of the franking privilege was read to the House, and the Committee on Post-Offices was instructed to inquire as to what steps should be taken to prevent such frauds. A number of bills of minor importance was then taken up and passed. The Committee on Commerce reported back the Senate bill regulating the transportation of nitro-glycerine with amendments, which were agreed to. The bill was then passed. A number of other bills were reported from the same committee and passed by the House. A joint resolution was passed authorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to sell the Government stock (eight hundred shares) in the Dismal Swamp Canal. The bill to amend the organic act of Washington as amended by the Senate, was taken up and the amendments were agreed to.
The Senate bill allowing the Union Pacific Railroad Company (Kansas City branch) to change the route of their road so as to go by the Smoky Hill route to Denver City, and thence to connect with the main branch of the Union Pacific Railroad at some point within fifty miles of that place, was passed after a long discussion. The Senate bill authorizing the hiring of a building for the temporary accommodation of the Department of State was passed, with an amendment reducing the appropriation for that purpose to twenty-five thousand dollars. The House soon after adjourned.
