The Summit County Tuberculosis and Health Association (SCTHA), a United Fund Agency, this week announced the results of its annual chest x-ray survey among area High School Juniors and Seniors. The mobile x-ray unit visited 29 Summit County and City high schools during the latter part of 1957.
Three active cases of Tuberculosis were discovered among the students.
Each case was found in a different school.
"A case of TB among students is a serious health problem," states Mrs. Donald Held, Executive Director of SCTHA. "TB is contagious and will spread quickly from one person to another if an active case goes unheeded. In a close environment, such as a class room, the germ spreads much faster than under normal conditions.
Three active cases among this age group could be classified as unusual since we no longer have the problem of tuberculosis milk or cattle. It was determined early in this century that most TB cases among children came from milk that contained the germs.
Now that milk is pasteurized and the cattle are tested by the Health Departments, this is no longer a problem."
Besides the three cases of TB, 82 other chest ailments were discovered among the students by this free Community Health Service. Among these were 21 suspected heart disorders, 10 cases of pneumonia, and one case of pleurisy.
The mobile unit is now in operation at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, conducting the first industrial survey of the year. All employees as well as the general public are invited to take advantage of the free chest x-rays while the unit is stationed inside the Goodyear Plants.
