The Washington Territory FEMALES.—It is stated that A. S. Mercer, Esq., of Washington Territory, who took a steamboat load of young women to a husband market on the Pacific coast last fall has written back that the enterprise is a success and that he will repeat the experiment next summer. It is to be presumed then that the interesting cargo of femininity reached its destination without utterly tearing each others' eyes out, and that the susceptible bachelors of Washington Territory rushed eagerly to the dock, provided with blank marriage licenses, duly authenticated, contesting eagerly for the first choice from among the loveables: thus at last all of the New England importations, even to the ugliest and oldest, were at last disposed of and are now engaged in frying slap-jacks and sweeping cabins in the homes of the Pacific. We are glad to learn that the experiment has been successful. Men greatly predominate on the Pacific coast and women in New England. If these countervailing disparities could be removed at the same time by such projects as this, barring their apparently commercial character, the family relation, that great conservator of all the virtues, would be more common, and great good would result.
