FIRED INTO CHURCH.

Pastor Fatally Shot and Miner on the Outside Was Killed.

Birmingham, Ala., Dec. 28.—A special to the News from Hanceville says that while a negro congregation was holding a Christmas tree celebration in a church at Stout's Mountain, a mining camp near here, a volley of shots was fired into the congregation from the outside. Rev. Clay, the pastor, was shot through the hips and will die. He was standing in the pulpit at the time. Ike Woodward was shot in the shoulder; Bob Jackson received a bullet in the abdomen and is fatally hurt. The shooting caused a panic and the negroes scrambled out of the building and ran through the darkness in every direction. This morning the dead body of Henry Jett, a white miner, was found at a corner of the church on the outside with a revolver lying near by. It is supposed that he was a member of the shooting party and was accidentally killed by one of his comrades who was at another corner of the building, as the negroes did not do any shooting. John Jett, a brother of the dead man, and Ted Blackwell, both white miners, have been arrested for participation in the affair. It is claimed that several have identified them as being among a party of white men seen outside the building with guns after the shooting. There is no known motive for the affair and it is supposed to have been the result of a general Christmas spree.
