We have the following remarkable Account, from the Political State, publish'd here last April, of a Lady famous for Learning: That a Lecture of Anatomy was read in the University of Bologna, by Dr. Bulli, at which were present, the Cardinals, Legate, and Archbishop, the Consul, and the Vice Legate; as also General Khevenhüller, Commander in Chief of the German Forces in Italy, together with the Count de Laurec; Prince Lobkowitz, and several other German Officers: After the Lecture, there was a Disputation in Osteology, the Question being, Whether the Bones of a human Body, had their Ossification by the means of certain Juices, or if they could grow without any such help? The Two Disputants were the Anatomist of the University, and the famous Mademoiselle Laura Bassi, a Graduate of that University, aged 22. They disputed in Latin, and during the whole Argument, which lasted an Hour and a half, the young Lady spoke with so much Eloquence, as both surprised and charmed all the Gentlemen present: Even the old Cardinals began to cry out, with Ovid,
Sive es docta; places raras dotata per artes.
