The Chinese.

The records of the San Francisco Custom-house show that in three years, from January 1, 1862, to January 1, 1865, 13,275 Chinese arrived at that port, of whom 78 were women. Of the 12,197 Chinamen, 11,417 were laborers, 291 mechanics, 163 merchants, 4 carpenters, 123 shoemakers, 97 grocers, 65 miners, 85 tanners, 13 tailors, 4 travellers, 1 physician, 1 interpreter, and 374 whose occupation is unknown. In 1865 there were arrivals at that port of 3,901; in 1866, 3,151; in 1867, 3,815; in 1869, 14,382; and during the first nine months of 1870, 4,536. From January 1, 1862, to September 1, 1870, 18,903 Chinese left San Francisco for China. On deducting departures from arrivals it will be found that there are not over 21,000 in the country, it being borne in mind that nearly all come by the Pacific route, and land at San Francisco.
