We have the satisfaction to inform the public of the re-establishment of civil government in the State of South Carolina, after having undergone the most horrid ravages that any country ever experienced from an irruption of the most barbarous nations. Slaughter, desolation, and every species of cruelty having marked the progress of the British arms through every part of that unfortunate country, which they have been able to penetrate. But under the divine blessing, and the unremitted exertions of the able commander Major-General Greene, seconded by the virtuous officers and soldiers under his command, composed of Continentals, and Militia of that State; this savage enemy is now confined within such narrow limits, as to enable Governor Rutledge to re-establish civil government.
We are further informed from undoubted authority, that Governor Rutledge has ordered the Judges of the Supreme Court, and the Attorney-General of that State, to repair to South Carolina with all possible expedition, to exercise their several functions. As the State is so far recovered, as to admit of the Court being held in the several places where they had been accustomed to be held, except Charlestown.*
*The usual places of holding the Courts in South-Carolina, were Charlestown, Georgetown, Cheraws, Camden, Orangeburgh, Ninety-Six, and Beaufort.
