It will appear in evidence, it is said, that when Maddox went to Secretary Chandler and offered to secure Louisiana for the Republicans for $100,000, Chandler roared with laughter at the proposition. Said he, "My friend, I won't say anything about it, but don't repeat that offer around here, or you will have a commission of lunacy sitting on you within twenty-four hours. We are going to have Louisiana for nothing, if there is an honest count, and we don't want it if it must be bought with money." Maddox persisting in his proposition, Chandler got mad and ordered him out.
