HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES—Feb. 13.

The bill for reducing the Marine Corps being under consideration, Mr. Eppes moved to disband all the officers, excepting those now serving in the Mediterranean. Rejected 50 to 45.

FEB. 14.

Mr. Rodney, moved that a committee be directed to inquire into the expediency of fixing a standard of weights and measures: but on the suggestion of Dr. Mitchell, that a subject so important and intricate would require much deliberation, the motion was ordered to lie on the table until tomorrow.

The bill for reducing the Marine Corps to 1 Captain, and 12 Lieutenants, and proportional privates, passed—Yeas 73. Nays 48. [The Senate rejected this bill almost without debate.—18 to 8.]

Mr. Bard's motion, that a Tax of ten Dollars be imposed on every Negro Slave imported into the United States, was debated until the usual hour of adjournment, without any decision. Messrs. Bard, Findley, S. L. Mitchell, and Sloan supported the motion; which was opposed by Messrs. Bedinger, Macon, Moore and Huger.

FEB. 15.

Mr. Reed, after a few prefatory observations, moved that a committee be instructed to inquire into the expediency of abolishing the offices of Accountants of the Navy and of the War Departments.—Agreed to; Ayes 61.

Tax on Slaves. The resolution on this subject was again discussed. Its postponement until May was moved, and negatived. Ayes 28. Noes 60. The resolution was finally carried in the affirmative.—Yeas 71.
