The Speech of Mr. HOLMES in the Senate of Massachusetts, published in this day's paper, breathes the purest patriotism and the finest eloquence. This accomplished orator has already received the applause of his fellow-citizens for his energetic opposition to the mad career of the Massachusetts Legislature at a former session. A man so bold and enlightened, who dares in the very front of faction, to maintain the cause of his country, and expose the designs of the British party to their infatuated followers, is of infinite value at this time, and deserves the encouragement and thanks of all good men. The speech before us is severe indeed, but not more so than the occasion required or the subject merited. Men who can declare the proudest triumphs of their country- men unworthy the gratitude of a moral and religious people, and yet celebrate the victories of their country's enemy; who, while their shores gleam with the flames of their burning towns and their very harbor is illumined by their blazing vessels, can yet decree celebrations and festivals in honor, indirectly, of the cruel foe whose myrmidons perpetrate these outrages and smile at the ruin they create-men so blind and culpable merit all the severity of indignant patriotism.
