The 16th Annual Convention of the United Beauty School Owners and Teachers Association and its affiliate, the Alphia Chi Pi Sorority and Fraternity just concluded its sessions in the cities of Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.
Perhaps the enchanting wonder and the famed hospitality of the verdant Far Northwest helped to make this meeting one of the most successful in the history of this remarkable fast-growing two part organization. But credit for the success must go to the dynamic leadership provided over the years by its Founder-Supervisor, the indefatigable Mrs. Marjorie Stewart Joyner of Chicago. She is rounding out her 45th year in the beauty culture field and has no peer as an organizer and civic leader.
More than 800 delegates from 42 states attended, with a special train from Chicago. This group of beauticians has established a precedent and set an international record for holding its convention sessions in successive cities in places as far-spread and glamorous as Los Angeles and Honolulu; New York City and Paris, France; and Daytona Beach, Florida; and Rome, Italy.
This year's headquarters were the Portland Sheraton Hotel in Portland and the Benjamin Franklin Hotel in Seattle. At the 3-day sessions in Portland, the highlights were gifts of $100 each to the Portland Urban League and the Portland Branch NAACP. A plaque for distinguished service was presented to E. Shelton Hill, Director of the Urban League.
