"It is impossible for me to express the joy which the news of the reversal of the decree of the Court of Session in the Douglas cause occasioned in this place. So soon as the express arrived, giving us the agreeable accounts of it, the Magistrates and Council, with most of the Gentlemen in the neighbourhood, and likewise the principal inhabitants of the place, assembled in the town house, and from thence went to the cross, where they drank long life and prosperity to Mr. Douglas, the Duchess of Douglas, his Grace the Duke of Queensberry, and in general all the friends and connections of that ancient and illustrious house. Every toast was succeeded by a volley of small arms, and several curious fire and water works were at the same time exhibited. The evening concluded with a general illumination, ringing of bells, bonfires, and every other possible demonstration of joy."
