In Piedmont, the most horrible transactions are going on. A vast number of the most intelligent and patriotic noblemen, who had evinced a desire to see their country liberated from a foreign yoke, have been seized and put to death, and their property confiscated. Others have been sent to the galleys for life. All those persons who were thus prosecuted by the Piedmontese government, were wealthy; the poor patriots were not looked after.
An atrocious anecdote is connected with the trial of capt. Garelli. He was tried, sentenced and hanged, without the assistance or advice of counsel. It is true, that at the mock trial the judges appointed an official counsel, but he was not permitted to consult with his client, nor to receive any instruction from him, nor was he permitted to call witnesses, or put any question to the witnesses for the prosecution.
The London Courier states, that "revolutions are merely restrained from bursting forth in Italy, and especially in Piedmont. Every thing languishes in Italy and Naples. One fact will give an idea of the present state of Piedmont. The capital is deserted. At Turin, a town whose population is estimated at from 80 to 84,000 souls, of which number are computed 20,000 craftsmen, 13,000 of the latter have deposited their working licences in the hands of the municipal authorities."
