Full Text

The following fact, extracted from a late London paper, serves to show from how trifling an origin disputes, attended by the most fatal consequences, will arise, and may perhaps tend in some measure to ridicule the fashionable, but barbarous practice of duelling.

Happening to be in Dublin lately, and being in company where there was one Mr. M. and one Mr. W.--Mr. M. was amusing himself by humming over part of a song, in these words:

'Tis the bud of the rose,
In the morning that blows,
Impearl'd with the dew.'

Mr. M., happening to be possessed of a good responsible nose, and having a frequent custom of blowing it, Mr. W. used the freedom to turn the lines thus--

"'Tis your beak of a nose
In the morning that blows,
Impearl'd with the dew.'"

Upon these words being pronounced, Mr. M. immediately left the company, and when Mr. W. returned to his lodgings, he found a challenge on his table, requesting of him to meet Mr. M. at a certain place, at half past eight next morning. Mr. W. immediately called on one of the gentlemen who had been in company, and asked the favor of him to be his second, to which he consented.

Next morning Mr. W. and his second repaired to the place at the time specified, where they found Mr. M. at the appointed time, with his second. The ceremony of measuring the ground being over and both parties ready, Mr. M. fired first, and narrowly missed, upon which Mr. W. fired, and shot Mr. M. through the body, of which he immediately expired.
