ABANDON KLONDIKE RELIEF.

Conclusions Have Been Reached that no Necessity Exists for it.

Washington, D. C., March 1.—The War Department has decided to abandon its expedition for the relief of the miners in the Klondike country because the conclusion has been reached that no necessity exists for it. Secretary Alger has written a letter to Senator Hawley, chairman of the committee on Military Affairs, explaining the Department's position and asking that Congress take action by joint resolution authorizing the Department to dispose of the supplies purchased for the expedition, including the reindeers which have just arrived from Norway, and to abandon the project entirely.
