What is this article about?
Egypt described by an American.—A writer in Professor Silliman's excellent Journal of Science, gives a most interesting and graphic description of the progress in internal improvements and public works which Egypt is making under her enterprising chieftain, Mohammed Aly. Cotton factories and iron works at Boulac, the port of Cairo—canals, founderies for muskets—half naked Arabs nimbly employed at the spindles—military and naval schools for officers, an immense citadel, eleven vessels of 100 guns, dock yards, 50,000 troops. Yet all this is for his own pocket and his own aggrandizement. He robs his people of all their earnings, leaving them in most abject misery with barely enough to live. This is civilization with a vengeance.
