New Jersey's vivacious, brown-skinned Marie Wainwright, Miss Morris Brown College of 1947 broke with tradition and awed hundreds of spectators with the 'new look', when the colorful float rolled out on the field at Ponce de Leon Park between halves and displayed the grid queen and her attendants.
Miss Wainwright was attired in white two-tiered sweeping taffeta gown with a sheer close fitting neckline and long sleeves, a perfect model for her tall statuesque figure.
She was attended by Miss Esther Smith and Miss Nancy Redd, who also wore formal models of black crepe with the decollete neckline. The attractive trio carried bouquets of purple chrysanthemums tied with black ribbon.
The fraternity queens wore attractive suits made on soft lines with matching accessories. Their bouquets were streamered with ribbons of the fraternities that they represented.
Miss Blanche Woods, Alpha Phi Alpha; Miss Evelyn Cawthon, Kappa Alpha Psi: Miss Hazel Tatum, Omega Psi Phi and Miss Rosebud Greenlee. Phi Beta Sigma.
Miss Wainwright was crowned by Mrs. Julia Evangeline Brown who was Miss Morris Brown ot 1946.
