Full Text
The expense incurred already in the third trial of the Mooney murder case at Waukegan amounts to over $8,000, all incurred in the attempt to secure a jury that was free from bias and prejudice. There were over twenty-two hundred and fifty men examined, all of whom except twelve were found to be incompetent to try the case. A number of such cases would have a tendency to make people think that the present jury system is a good deal more of a farce than it now is. It may well be doubted whether the jury system is so great a blessing as it is generally thought to be.
