MATAMORAS, April 29.—General Cevallos, now commanding here, is the man who took young and old men from their homes in Merida, Yucatan, in 1869 and shot them without trial. Matamoros is defended by five bastion forts connected by strong parapets encircling the city, with their flanks on the river and lunettes situated one hundred yards in the rear between the forts. The following are the names of the forts: Paradiz, Monterey, Iturbide and San Fernando on the right and Trevino on the left. The regular troops, National Guards and police number 1500 men. The citizens are acting as police. Dispatches received from Trevino's camps, five leagues distant, state that he will march to-night and be before the city to-morrow. He is confident he will capture the place. He has four thousand men and twelve guns. A small force of revolutionists are near Bagdad, at the mouth of the river. They intend capturing the place and holding it to prevent reinforcements arriving. The steamer Tobasco is now due and Trevino expects to capture the troops on board. Trevino will send an additional force to Bagdad to-morrow. Dispatches say that Trevino has no fear of the enemy in the rear as Pedro Martinez's force is beyond Saltillo holding the Juarists in check, and the government is engaged in keeping down the Lerdistas.
