CAPE CANAVERAL
Lt. Cdr. Malcolm Scott Carpenter landed 250 miles from his intended spot Thursday because of the angle of the capsule's flight at the time the arresting rocket was fired. It was announced yesterday. Radio communication was broken during Carpenter's descent.

STEAMING AT TOP SPEED to the pick-up spot to recover astronaut Lt. Cdr. Malcolm Scott Carpenter 125 miles northeast of St. Thomas Thursday is the guided missile launching ship Farragut. The ship is photographed with fifteen miles yet to go to reach the point where Carpenter's Aurora VII capsule came to rest. The huge billow of smoke from her funnel attests to the effort to make all possible speed. (Daily News photo)
