INSPRUCK, MAY 5.
Official Bulletin from Gen. Bellegarde to Count Bellegarde, Imperial Aulic Commissioner.
Head-Quarters at Susa, May 3.
On the 30th ult. I attacked the enemy in Lower Engadin with several columns, and though they made a very obstinate resistance in many advantageous positions, especially near the bridge of Strada, I repulsed them under their very entrenchments at Ramos; in which place, notwithstanding their position was very advantageous by the site itself, they were attacked with all possible resolution; night breaking in, and the men being exhausted by a march of twenty leagues, prevented my accomplishing the enterprise.
Fieldmarshal Lieut. Count Hadick, after surmounting many difficulties, advanced at the same time over the mountain of Scharl, and after encountering many of the enemy's posts, advanced as far as Tschlin. The enemy, thus threatened in their rear, abandoned their position at midnight, and retreated through Fetan and Guarda, where they took station.
Next day I effected a junction with F. M. Lieutenant Count Hadick near Schlans. I pushed my out-posts beyond Fetan. On the 2d inst. though my progress was much impeded by the badness of the weather and the falling of snow, I continued to advance through Guarda, drove the enemy's out-posts behind Lavin, and forced the enemy by attacking them in front and flank, notwithstanding their advantageous position and the most obstinate resistance, to make a precipitate retreat as far as the plain of Zernez; though they attempted several times to defend themselves in a resolute manner and in new positions; night came on and hindered the continuation of the victory by a pursuit of the enemy.
In this battle the hostile Gen. Demont fell into our hands, besides several officers and privates. This morning before day break the enemy also left their position there, and set fire to all three bridges across the Inn near Zernez, (two of them were however saved) and retreated with the utmost speed beyond Brail.
The enemy's loss in killed and wounded is very considerable--among the prisoners were brought in the above mentioned Gen. Demont, some chiefs of brigade, staff and commissioned officers, and many privates.
Field-marshal-Lieutenant Count Hadick, praises particularly the zealous exertion of the Companies of Tyrolese marksmen, especially that of Botzen, under the command of Maj. Kazzau and Captain Taimer--that company has also sustained a loss of 3 men killed and 4 wounded.
(Signed) BELLEGARDE.
