"We have just received here the Intelligence of an Engagement between three of the Ships of War belonging to this Republick and two Ships and three Frigates belonging to the Turks, which publickly confirms, beyond a Doubt, the Intention of Venice to support the Russians in the present War. The Russians had possessed themselves of a small Port Town and Castle called Spina Longa, on the Island of Candia, and had placed a Garrison of 4000 Men there, which was greatly in Want of Provisions and Necessaries, owing to their Supplies being cut off by the Turks, Admiral Spiridow therefore desired a strong Convoy of the Venetian Admiral for six Transports, which was granted, and they had just made the Island when the Turkish Squadron came up with them; an Engagement ensued, in which the Turks were obliged to sheer off, leaving one of their Frigates in the Hands of the Venetians."
