There is something curious about the American silver dollar and half dollar of 1804, as a numismatist. There were about 20 of the dollars coined, but only four of them got into circulation. Three of them are in coin collections to-day, however, and they are the most valuable of all American coins. Why the dollar of 1804 was never in circulation after leaving the mint is one of the unsolved Government mysteries. The half dollar of 1804 is surrounded by a mystery equally profound. There were 10,000 of these coined, but not one was ever known to be in circulation.
