Mathias Invites Goldberg To Tour Western Maryland

Congressman Charles McC. Mathias has invited Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg to accompany him on a personal inspection tour of the unemployment situation in critical areas of Western Maryland.

Mathias disclosed he has asked the Labor Secretary to be his guest on a tour of the labor surplus areas around Cumberland and Hagerstown "so that he could have first-hand knowledge of our situation."

The Cumberland labor market has a current unemployment rate of 7.3 per cent, Mathias said, and the Hagerstown labor market has one of 9.8 per cent.

"Both of these are currently designated by your department as areas of substantial and persistent employment," Mathias told Goldberg in a telegram.

The Secretary of Labor last week made a personal inspection of shipyards and the Martin Marietta Co. in the Baltimore industrial area, and had invited Mathias to join him.

Previous commitments prevented Mathias from making the tour. He said that while he favored efforts to bring jobs to Maryland, he felt steps to improve employment in Western Maryland should not be neglected.

In a related development this week, Mathias noted the Defense Department has requested Congressional approval of the purchase of five Fairchild F-27 airplanes.

He said this reversal of the Air Force's views of the plane is the result of "a concerted effort on many fronts."

Mathias also said that "a major factor in this reversal of Air Force policy toward the F-27" was "the great faith in this airplane which has been exhibited by the manufacturer and the people who work so hard in its construction."

Approval of the plane order, observers noted, could relieve the unemployment situation in Hagerstown, where Fairchild last year was forced to curtail its plant operation because of a drop-off in federal contracts.

Air Force's views of the plane is the result of "a concerted effort on many fronts."
