Full Text

Joe Walsh and Howard Colley, two well known men of Keno Hill, recently had a narrow escape from an angry bear with three cubs. The two men came unexpectedly upon the bear and her little ones; and the cubs, instead of running away from the men ran towards them. The mother evidently fearing for her young, charged. The men were without weapons and there was nothing for them to do but climb a tree. Colley reached safety up a spruce and Walsh climbed another tree, which had been burned and was rotten and fell under his weight, throwing him to the ground. He scrambled up with the bear close at his heels and made a desperate rush for the tree where Colley was. He shinned up with the agility of a squirrel, with the bear after him. Walsh's first leap gave him a few feet start but the bear was right at his heels, having four feet to work with she made better headway up the tree. Fortunately she could not do much but scratch his legs with her claws, while Walsh in return, kicked the "beast" in the face with his spiked shoes, giving her about all she wanted. After a bit she slid back to the ground and sat there for an hour and a half, with her cubs playing around her, while Colley from the top of the tree and Walsh from as near the top as he could get, talked to her the nicest possible way. They told her how nice her babies were and how young and graceful she looked herself. She did not pay any attention to these sugary compliments at first, but finally was won over and departed with her family.
