Inconsistency of Pierce's Organ
The Washington Union clearly enunciates the principal issue in the next canvass for President to be the "Nebraska question."—
It seems rather a curious fact in the history of the times, that this particular organ of President Pierce, is at this time declaring the bill which repealed the Missouri Compromise is the principal issue in the coming canvass, and the Union favors that bill, yet it was probably the first paper in the country which raised a warning voice against the repeal of this compromise. It is a notorious fact, though not brought up to the recollection of the Union lately, that when it was first proposed to repeal the Missouri Compromise, as was afterwards done by what is known as the Kansas Nebraska bill, the Washington Union defended that Compromise, and in a warning voice bade the country and its party beware of disturbing it. The organ of the President, these articles spoke his voice—and certainly they spoke the voice of the people. But suddenly the organ changed its tune. It became furiously 'Nebraskaish'—it bitterly denounced that very compromise it had been almost as warmly defending. Why was this? Why it never would have been but for the fact, that one man can serve two terms as President of the United States! Mr. Pierce had suddenly conceived the idea, doubtless placed in his head by Douglass, that this Nebraska Bill could be used as a powerful electioneering hobby in the South. To carry out that idea, and to give Pierce the full benefit of this hobby. the Union is now declaring the Nebraska question the principal issue of the coming campaign. Its inconsistency on this question is as notorious as the inconsistency of many of the lesser organs of its party. If the Nebraska bill were the sole issue of this campaign, woe to the rascally and corrupt Pierce Administration.
