MISCELLANY.
FROM THE CONNECTICUT MIRROR.
We were kindly furnished with the following lines by one, with whose productions we hope to be more frequently favoured. They refer to a little piece lately published in this paper :
AUTUMN.
What is there cheering in the autumn leaves?
Whirling in swift and ceaseless eddies, o'er
The rural path so late with verdure gay?
The cold, blue streamlets shuddering, find them strew
Their banks--prelusive of those icy chains'
Now forming on the Arctick forge for them.
-The Forests pay to Earth their borrow'd robe-
For she, stern usurer, exacts the debt
When most they need the loan bids ruffian blasts
Rend off the sylvan shield, and waving crown
Those fair, fond gifts of her capricious love,
And yield their victims to dire Winter's wrath.
-'Tis true-strange brightness decks the realm of frost,"
Strong yellow gleams, the acidulated green
Turns sickly--verging toward the umber'd brown--
Rich orange dazzles with opposing hue,
While here and there, the bloody tint of Mars
Glares like a war-flag o'er the varied field.
--Still this unnatural beauty but portends
Hasty decay,-like the bright hectick flush
Too deep for health,-and ominous of Death.
Yet some there are, who view this type of Man
With cheerful eye, holding the body's death
To be the birth of his immortal soul,
And hailing all those emblems that announce
His tutelage complete, -his bliss begun.
These love the wind-strung harp where Nature wakes
Her dirge-like melodies, and musing joy
In the brief beauty of the Autumn leaves.
