COMMUNICATION

When native genius and personal worth come before us, it excites all those noble passions of which mankind are so susceptible, and brings forth our warmest approbation and applause. These ideas, Mr. Editor, were suggested to me by observing that this night's performance at our theatre, is intended for the benefit of Mr. Gray, a native American, and one who promises fairly to hold a distinguished rank in the Drama. Since the opening of the theatre this season, Mr. Gray has played several characters of old men in a style that would gain him applause in the first theatres on the continent. To particularize his perfections in the various parts, would be an arduous task—suffice it to say, that his old Hardcastle, Restive, Sir P. Teazle, &c. have gained him universal approbation, and convinces us that he possesses all the intrinsic requisites of a great actor. Now, Mr. Editor, when we are so forward in bestowing our favors on every European star who comes over to ease us of our cash, by condescending to play for six nights only, let us not forget to encourage our own citizens, who enlist under the banners of Thespis. Though I am willing to "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's," and give due credit to those transient meteors, yet I would not wish to have it said, that on this occasion, our citizens were tardy in rewarding genuine ability; and I hope that Mr. G.'s endeavors to please, will be rewarded by an overflowing house, and native talents no longer thrown in the shade by
