Retirement After Age 65 Urged

The members of Local 12 UAW, at their April meeting last Friday, adopted a resolution calling for retirement of workers at age 65, in order to ease the unemployment situation.

The resolution, introduced by the Spicer Unit, will be sent to members of Congress, and also to other unions in Toledo and elsewhere for their action, the membership voted.

The resolution pointed out that about 6,000,000 workers in the United States are over 60 years of age. Should they be enabled to retire, job opportunities would be provided for all workers presently unemployed, as well as new workers graduating from school this summer and entering the labor market for the first time.

Text of the resolution:

WHEREAS: There are better than four million people still unemployed in the United States, and

WHEREAS: This spring there will be over a million students graduating from our high schools and colleges, looking for permanent jobs, thus creating more unemployment at that time, and

WHEREAS: Industry is continually using more and more automated machinery, creating a condition of less employees needed to produce the production needed, and

WHEREAS: There are over sixty million people employed throughout the country, and according to statistics, 10% of these people are over sixty years of age. If it was possible for all of the people over sixty years of age to retire, this would mean there would be over six million people who could retire. If they did so it would make job opportunities for all the people who are laid-off, and the students who will be looking for jobs in the spring, and

WHEREAS: It is very important something be done to immediately relieve the unemployment we now have, and stop the gradual increase of unemployment by automation.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That Local 12 UAW-CIO go on record as calling on our International Officers and all Local bargaining committees to negotiate in all our future contracts, and in any contracts that can now be opened, a compulsory retirement clause for all our members and officers at age 65, it being understood that in the event Congress lowers the age limit of Social Security compulsory retirement will automatically be lowered to that age.
