(Washington Correspondence N. Y. Tribune
As I have said repeatedly, not the least
credit is to be given to the rumors coming
from abroad, concerning the recognition of
the South by France. There is not the
least shadow of truth in any of them, and
the French government positively disclaims any intention of that kind. The
question has never been introduced in cabinet council; I consequently cannot have
been deceived. If the thing ever takes
place it will not be before public opinion
has been prepared for the event, and before being debated in the French Houses,
which meet in January next.
