Full Text

Mexico.—The following—on the subject of our relations with Mexico is from the Washington Union of Friday.

"Letters have also been received in Washington from the capital, as well as from Vera Cruz. We understand that the indications which they convey are not all decisive, but are, on the contrary, contradictory in their import. The correspondence from the capital seems to point to peace. The letters from the coast incline more to war. A sign which is less favorable to peace, is that Almonte, with all his prejudices against us, has just been appointed Secretary of War. Another sign, of a less unfriendly character, is, that the new Congress has been convened. Several reasons are assigned for its meeting. The most prominent of these relates to the domestic organization of Mexico. The first is for the consideration of various internal improvements, affecting the tariff, &c.; the second is, to place before them the proceedings taken by the government on the resolutions concerning Texas, passed at the last session. It is only when they come to the second reason, that they allude in a distant manner the course which it may become Congress to pursue, in consequence of the annexation of Texas. This consideration is thus, comparatively speaking, thrown into the back ground of Mexican policy."

Event Details

Letters received in Washington from Mexico's capital and Vera Cruz show mixed signals on US-Mexico relations, with capital correspondence pointing to peace and coastal letters to war. Almonte, prejudiced against the US, appointed Secretary of War, unfavorable to peace. New Congress convened mainly for domestic organization like tariff improvements and to review government actions on prior Texas resolutions, with Texas annexation addressed distantly.
