Local Fans At Last Find Out What Causes So Much Interference Here An electric lightbulb loose in its socket, an electric heating pad, a vacuum cleaner, defective electric wiring or almost any little old thing in your own home or in the home of a neighbour may cause an interference that will make your radio receiving set a nuisance and a vexation in your home, according to John W. Swanson, government radio expert in a talk to Elizabeth City radio fans at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr. Swanson came to Elizabeth City at the instance of Congressman Warren to try to find out why Elizabeth City has such poor results with radio. With an outfit that made him look like an organ grinder minus the monkey. He made a tour of the town and found our major trouble. A high power electric line swinging in the wind and making a contact with an insulated guide wire was causing all the trouble. Any electrical accessory or appliance that gives off a spark may cause trouble. Even many radio sets are generating trouble themselves and making a noise in every other radio set in the neighborhood. Mr. Swanson found our present trouble. but he says we will always have troubles and the only way to remedy them is to keep right down behind them all the time and locate them just as he located this one. And so then and there Elizabeth City fans organized a radio club and under the direction of Mr. Swanson and the U. S. Department of Commerce they are going to keep everlastingly down behind the static nuisance in Elizabeth City and try to correct it wherever it is found. It will mean better radio for Elizabeth City and a big boost for radio dealers. Hundreds of homes in Elizabeth City have kept off radio because of the disturbances here. Officers of the club are Rev. Geo. F. Hill, president; Geo. J. Spence vice-president; W. O. Saunders, secretary-treasurer; Everett Harson chairman of the Interference Committee and O. F. Gilbert chairman of the Membership Committee. Members are enrolling readily on an enrollment fee of $2.00. The dues will be 25 cents to $1.00 a year. The club will make an immediate purchase of a trouble detector exactly like the one used by Mr. Swanson and it will be placed in hands of Mr. Harrison who will serve without charge in locating static troubles for any member of the club.
