The Investigating Committee.
Corrupt Practices Exposed—Money for Connecticut and New Hampshire.

Notwithstanding the Senate's Investigating Committee was appointed to cover frauds under Grant's administration, and to whitewash the plunderers, it has been impossible for them to shut the daylight from a great many monstrous wrongs and vast plundering schemes in the New York Custom-House. Grant's favorites sent on and recommended by him have become rich; and the black-mailing system is shown to have been systematized and vast. The machinery of the Custom-House, the Collector, the weighers, gaugers, and many employees, have done more work for the Republican party than for the government. Sixty thousand dollars a year have been paid to employees who have done nothing for the government, had no public duty at all assigned to them, but who devoted their time in the interest of the Custom-House wing of the Republican party. The gross corruption of the concern has been exposed to a considerable degree, notwithstanding Senator Howe, one of the Committee, acts as an attorney would act for the evil-doers. In the somewhat partial report of this Committee, we have an exposure, to some degree, of the corruption funds raised by the federal office holders to buy votes in Connecticut and New Hampshire. The New York Custom-House ring have sent their corruption funds into Connecticut for years. Evidence was brought out last Spring that the N. Y. Custom House sent $10,000 here to buy votes for Jewell. The Allen and his gang were also sent to New Haven to corrupt the election. Several years ago Thurlow Weed raised in New York $17,000 for the New Hampshire and Connecticut elections.—Hartford Times.
