How unfortunate are the Editors of Democratic papers who presume to speak of the acts of Mr. Polk, before they get their cue from the organ; and even sometimes when they do speak by its authority. Every one remembers how flat the small fry felt, after they had lustily declared "the whole of Oregon or none" to be the true democratic creed, and then found that Polk had backed out. Latterly, we have had another exhibition of the same sort, on the River and Harbor Bill. Various members of Congress having written home that they had triumphed over false friends and open enemies, (never dreading a veto, after the article in the Organ praising the River bill) but finding it was only a ruse to get their votes for the British Free Trade bill, and that the River bill was vetoed, they felt particularly flat. Again; the Post, a loco foco paper, denounced the California rumor as a slander upon the Administration, and in a very few days the Senate bro't out the letter to Stevenson, in which the designs were shadowed forth, and a request that it be kept from the people. Now see how the Post is caught again: Vicksburg Whig
