A Disgraceful Surrender.—Our telegraphic advices in another column, together with other indications, leave but little room to doubt but that Sumter and Pickens are to be evacuated by order of Mr. Lincoln! We hope and trust that there may be produced some reason for this step, but we believe the intelligence will cause a cry of indignation to rise up from millions of hearts all over the country! Only one week to-day, standing upon the steps of the Capitol, as the highest representative of the American people, he took the solemn oath of allegiance to the Constitution and the laws. He then pledged himself solemnly, as follows:
'The power confided to me will be used to hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the Government.'
If the telegraph is to be believed—we have little reason to doubt its veracity in this instance, that solemn pledge is to be violated. The depth of infamy to which even James Buchanan did not descend, it appears, is reserved for Abraham Lincoln to sound.
But we have neither time nor hearts to comment at length upon this unexpected phase in the affairs of secession. We believe, if this measure is carried out, will prove the death blow of the present Administration, and the death knell of the Union at the same time. A government so cowardly, so craven, has made itself beneath the respect of a braver loyal people, and the quicker it is dead and buried, out of the way, out of sight, and smell, the better. Oh, for an hour of James Buchanan!
