Full Text

For the Sumter Banner.

To Major Haynsworth.

Sir: The attention of the people of this District, and of a large portion of the State has been for some time directed to various subjects of interest, upon which most of the candidates of this District have expressed their sentiments, either before the people directly or through the press.

And, as we hold that in all representative Governments, the people have an incontestable right to know the principles of those who aspire to represent them; you being announced a candidate to represent Claremont in our next Legislature, we would be gratified if you would answer the following interrogatories:

1st. Are you in favor of equalizing the representation in the Legislature, and especially in the Senate according to population and taxation?

2d. Are you in favor of giving the election of Electors for President and Vice President to the people?

3d. Are you in favor of any modification of the Militia laws of this State?

4th. And "last but not least" are you in favor of the election of the nominees of the National Democratic party, Pierce and King for President and Vice President of the United States?

ONE OF THE PEOPLE.
