Charles Wakefield Cadman
(Biographical Sketch)
Charles Wakefield Cadman was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1881. His ancestry was a musical one, his great grandfather, Samuel Wakefield, being the builder of the first pipe organ west of the Alleghenies, as well as the composer of some early sacred music, and the author of a book on harmony. Cadman's musical education was gained in Pittsburgh, but in 1910 (the year after the appearance of his Four Indian Songs) he accompanied Luigi Von Kunits to his villa in southern Austria with a class in instrumentation. He also had the advantage of orchestral criticism from Emil Paur, then conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
He has been a prolific song writer, having contributed more than two hundred numbers to that literature. Some of these have had extraordinary popularity and are familiar to music lovers in every civilized country. He has several cantatas, song cycles, choral works, and part songs to his credit, and has also published pieces for violin, piano and organ.
