PITTSBURG'S GREAT BLAZE
Which Destroyed $3,500,000 of Property
CONTINUES A MYSTERY

One Fireman Loses His Life, While Four Others Sustain Serious But Not Dangerous Injuries.

Pittsburg, Pa., May 3.—The origin of the fire which destroyed $3,500,000 worth of merchandise and property last night, is a mystery. The flames broke out about midnight in the wholesale grocery building of T. C. Jenkins & Co., and burned with great fury until 4 o'clock this morning. The insurance will probably amount to $1,500,000. The burnt section extends from Fifth street to Cecil alley on Pennsylvania and from Cecil alley to Fifth street on Liberty street, covering an area of several acres.

One fireman was killed and a number injured by falling walls. The dead man is Geo. Atkinson, of Fifteen engine company. The injured are: Elmer Crook, No. 7 engine company; struck on the head by falling bricks. Michael Daly, No. 7 engine company; cut and bruised and arm broken by falling arc lamp. Robert Badger, No. 4 engine company; ankle broken. George Meekin, No. 7 engine company: struck by falling bricks and cut and bruised.

The injured men will all recover.

The fire completely destroyed two of the greatest mercantile houses of Pittsburg, the wholesale grocery establishment of Thomas C. Jenkins and the retail store of Joseph Horne & Co. About 200 insurance companies scattered all over the country held policies on the stock of the last named concern.
