Full Text

Interview with Mrs. Cavanaugh.
Mrs. M. G. Cavanaugh returned from Cheyenne by last night's train. She was immediately called upon by a representative of the Sentinel desirous of obtaining the result of her trip. She states that Bob (her husband) was greatly surprised about the whole thing. He claims that his departure with Miss Ross was purely accidental, and that no improper intimacy existed between them. The detective employed in the case informed Mrs. Cavanaugh that Bob had a ticket for Denver, while Miss Ross was booked for Cheyenne. Their baggage was shipped in the same way. He also ascertained that they occupied separate berths on the train. Bob was detained by the Sheriff at Cheyenne on the telegram sent from here, but was never lodged in jail. Miss Ross was also kept under the official eye. A close search revealed $100 in the possession of Miss Ross, and a larger sum, including some mining stocks, on the person of Robert, but not nearly the amount attributed to him. He surrendered to Mrs. Cavanaugh the mining stocks and all the money he had, save $150. The truth seems to be that Bob had been gambling in stocks without the knowledge of Mrs. Cavanaugh and had lost most of her money. It was for this reason, he states, that he determined to leave Eureka for a time, not having the moral courage to frankly own up to his bad luck. He thought he would go away for a while and write back the particulars. His destination is Leadville, Colorado. He was to have continued his journey on the same day Mrs. Cavanaugh left for home. Miss Ross was still in Cheyenne and expected to remain there. In explanation of the Battle Mountain trip, Bob says they preferred going down to meet the East bound train to remaining over several hours in quiet Palisade. He informed his unfortunate wife that he would return to Eureka in about a month and try to make everything right.
