Supporting past efforts to prevent the enactment of a bill which would extend the quota principle of the immigration law to the entrance of Mexicans into the United States, many prominent citizens and organizations of Douglas are now busy telegraphing and writing protests to representatives in Washington against such a measure which is now pending.
According to word received here from Congressman Carl Hayden, House Resolution 6741 advocates the extension of the quota principle to Mexican immigrants and if this is approved, only 1557 Mexicans would be allowed to enter this country annually.
With the receipt of this advice, local citizens vitally concerned in the Mexican immigration problem are sending protests to congress against the resolution which is before the committee on immigration and naturalization.
Efforts of Douglas residents and organizations to prevent such an extension of the quota principle is in line with the action taken at the Border States secretarial meeting in this city last April. At that time, secretaries of chambers of commerce from the state of Arizona, Texas, California, New Mexico, Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico, passed a resolution which stated in strong terms that the application of the quota idea to Mexican immigration would be a serious blow to the industries of this section of the United States and Mexico, and that consequently any efforts to foster that move would be actively opposed.
