A minor but vexing problem in the Virgin Islands is how to pronounce a very common four-letter word.
The word is "Gade".
According to Lis King, the Daily News' "Woman About Town" who was born in Denmark, the word is pronounced "GA-the."
Pronunciation aside, the names of the various Gade and Kvarter in Charlotte Amalie are either not used or the translations commonly not known.
There are three Kvarter downtown: Kongens, Dronningens and Kronprindsens. These are divided by the two main guts of the city and are, respectively, King's Quarter, Queen's Quarter, and Crown Prince Quarter.
"Main Street" is Dronningens Gade, Queen's street.
"Back Street" is Kimmelskafts Gade, named for one of the more famous sections of Copenhagen.
"Garden Street" is Kommandant Gade. Commander Street.
Aside from Gade, other names for roadways are commonly found here. Straede, which looks like the English word "street" actually means alley. It is pronounced "STRAY-the". Tvder is a small byway connecting two streets. If you weren't born in Denmark, you might as well forget all those consonants. Vej is a rural road and is pronounced "VIE."
Some of the more interesting or more prominent streets are translated as follows:
Snegle Gade, Winding St.
Norre Gade, Northern St.
Trompeter Gade, Bugler St.
Borger Gade, Citizen St.
Nellike Gade, Carnation St.
Slagter Gade, Butcher St.
Regjerings Gade, Government St.
Torve Straede, Market Alley
Pile Straede, Willow Alley.
Raadets Gade, Council St.
Haabets Gade, Hope St.
Kompagni Gade, Company St.
Hassel Have, Nut Garden.
Bjerge Gade, Hill St.
