Extract of a Letter from a Gentleman in Lisbon, dated Sept. 7, 1762. to another in New York:

The British and Portuguese Forces are beginning the Campaign against the Spaniards. On the 28th Inst. an Express arrived at this Court from the Count de Lippe, (Commander in Chief of the Forces against the Spaniards) with an Account, That in the Night between the 26th and 27th, Brigadier General Burgoyne surprised and took Sword in Hand, a Spanish Frontier Town of Importance called Valencia de Alcantara, where they found a Quantity of Stores, Cattle, Horses, &c. He had with him 400 Men of his own Regiment of Dragoons, English ; 6 Companies of English Grenadiers, four teen Companies of Portuguese Grenadiers, and 200 Portuguese Horse. There were in the Place the whole Regiment of Valencia, and 7 Companies of Grenadiers, who were all put to the Sword because they got into the Houses, & fired after the surrender. except 63 Soldiers, 14 Officers, 30 Peasants, and the Governor who is a Major General. The Garrison, with the Peasants, made up about 2000 Men. Almeida has been for some Time besieged by the Spaniards : and on the 16th Instant they gave a general Assault, which was bravely repulsed, and they lost 2000 Men in the Affair. By the last Letters the Place continued to defend itself vigorously.....

There were taken in Valencia, as Military Stores, ....20 Mortars, 37 Pieces of Cannon, 3000 Shot.200 Carts, 700 Mules of Beans, 3000 Bags of Barley, 5042 of Wheat, 8000 Musquets, 150 Pikes, 3060 Sacks of Flour, 1089 Halberts, 4300 Swords, 300 Qrs. of Gun. powder, 1689 Fardoess of Clothing, 500 Pair of Boots, 10 Pair of Colours, 4 Pair of Kettle Drums, 30 common Drums.

Almeida besieged by Spaniards; their August 16 assault repulsed with 2000 losses; place still defending.
