It will be remembered that the Washington Patriot, several months since, gravely asserted that not a dollar of the proceeds arising from the sale of war material had reached the Federal Treasury. The gross amount realized was further named by the Patriot, and figured up some $15,000,000. After an interval of so long a period—doubtless improved to arrange the figures—a defense is now made, and it is alleged that all the money received from the source indicated, did not reach nine millions of dollars, and was properly accounted for by the proper officers. The difference between nine and fifteen millions of dollars is evidently the steal agreed upon in this case. The agitation of the question may have scared nine millions out of the hands of the plunderers, but they intend to hold on to the other six millions. This is the best possible view of the affair for the "Ring." But we doubt if one cent will ever be paid into the Treasury. A put-up account may be submitted to the people, but the money will remain in the hands of friends and supporters of Gen. Grant.
