Full Text
Song of the Scornful Maiden.
BY W. L. SHOEMAKER.
A way with your wooing, away!
I care not for love,-no, not I:
I am free from his merciless sway,
I am free as the clouds in the sky.
The hearts that he binds in his chain,
May boast of their semblance of joy;
He ne'er shall give my bosom pain,
For I fear not the blind little boy!
Away with your wooing,—away!
I care not for love, -no,-not I:
I am free from his merciless sway,
I am free as the clouds in the sky.
His arrows, I know, are of flame,
And fly, swift as thought, through the air;
But my fancy he'll never shall tame,—
My scorn of such weapons impair!
Ye may say I am heartless and cold;
Ye may sigh and may sue as ye please,
But my liberty's better than gold,
And I heed not such tauntings as these.
Away with your wooing, -away!
I care not for love, no, not I:
I am free from his merciless sway.
I am free as the clouds in the sky.
