University Co-op House Has Record To Be Proud Of

At 1721 University Ave., on the University of Minnesota's fraternity row, the Students' Cooperative House, first of its kind hereabouts, is ending its second profitable year. Its leaders are already looking forward to the time, perhaps within a year, when they will open a second house to accommodate cooperatively-minded students looking for quality rooming and eating facilities at exceptionally low prices. (Total room and board expense for the past year was $84 per student per quarter.)

The Co-op House is justifiably proud of its top ranking in all-round campus activity.

The grade average for the past year was 1.6, higher than any fraternity. House athletic teams finished in the upper bracket in both football and hockey and only one game from the top in basketball. Many of the members are leaders in student affairs, staff members of the Minnesota Daily, the Minnesota Law Review, and so on.

The Co-op House is run democratically by the student members themselves, with a weekly schedule of work and responsibility for each student. There is a faculty board of advisers with which the students may confer. Cooking is cared for by Mrs. Wischkaemper and two assistants.

President of the House is Jack Echternacht; secretary, Shirley Croes, and treasurer, Pershing Doonan.

Another member, Mike Majetich, was recently elected organization director of the Midwest Federation of Campus Cooperatives.
